Test Sump Pump
Many basements contain sump pumps to remove any water that might accumulate during a storm or from condensation and cracks in the foundation. Test your sump by pouring a small cup of water on it to ensure it will work when you need it most.

Find your sump pump and uncover it. Trace the electric cables back to the outlet.
Check to see whether or not your cable has (1) one plug or (2) two plugs in which one plug (the backup plug) is inserted into the back of another plug (the main plug), which is then inserted into the wall.
If you have a main and backup plug then unplug the main plug from the wall. Then unplug the backup plug from the main plug. Then plug the backup plug directly into the wall. If you hear your sump pump turn on then you know it is working. If not you will need to repair or replace your sump pump.
Fill your bucket with water. If the sump pump turns on and clears the water then you know it is working. If not you will need to repair or replace your sump pump.
Recover your sump pump. You're done!
